<p>Die <b>Halecostomi</b> sind eine <a href="Taxon" title="Taxon">Gruppe</a> der <a href="Knochenfische" title="Knochenfische">Knochenfische</a> innerhalb der <a href="Strahlenflosser" title="Strahlenflosser">Strahlenflosser</a>. Ursprünglich umfasste sie zwei <a href="Familie_(Biologie)" title="Familie (Biologie)">Familien</a> ursprünglicher, ausgestorbener <a href="Echte_Knochenfische" title="Echte Knochenfische">Echter Knochenfische</a> (Teleostei), die <a href="Pholidophoriformes" title="Pholidophoriformes">Pholidophoridae und Oligopleuridae</a><sup id="cite_ref-regan_1-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-regan-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>. In der modernen, <a href="Kladistik" title="Kladistik">kladistisch</a> geprägten <a href="Systematik_(Biologie)" title="Systematik (Biologie)">Systematik</a> bilden sie, wie im folgenden <a href="Kladogramm" class="mw-redirect" title="Kladogramm">Kladogramm</a> dargestellt, die gemeinsame Gruppe aus <a href="Kahlhechtartige" class="mw-redirect" title="Kahlhechtartige">Kahlhechtartigen</a> (Amiiformes) und Echten Knochenfischen, schließen also eine weitaus größere Anzahl an <a href="Taxon" title="Taxon">Subtaxa</a> ein.

<p><a href="Molekularbiologie" title="Molekularbiologie">Molekulargenetische</a> Analysen der Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse der Strahlenflosser haben jedoch ergeben, dass der Kahlhecht (<i>Amia calva</i>) näher mit den <a href="Knochenhechte" title="Knochenhechte">Knochenhechten</a> (Lepisosteidae) verwandt ist als mit den Echten Knochenfischen. Für diese gemeinsame Gruppierung der Kahl- und Knochenhechte wird der ebenfalls bereits in der klassischen Systematik gebrauchte Name <a href="Knochenganoiden" title="Knochenganoiden">Holostei</a> (Knochenganoiden) genutzt.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Sollte diese Gruppierung bei zukünftigen Analysen Bestand haben, würde der Name Halecostomi hinfällig.
</p><p>Das Ergebnis der molekularen Analysen wurde durch eine vergleichende Studie der Skelettanatomie von ursprünglichen <a href="Neuflosser" title="Neuflosser">Neuflossern</a> (Neopterygii) unter Einschluss <a href="Fossil" title="Fossil">fossiler</a> Taxa bestätigt.<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
